STATEMENT

Through figurative oil paintings and portraiture, I observe a balance between the

mundane and the divine. My paintings address themes of domesticity, satisfaction, and the sacred. My investment in the history of European painting directly influences my creative process and conceptual decision making. Using a muted, and often dark color pallet reminiscent of the Northern Renaissance, I paint collected objects, intimate spaces, and contemplative figures, reimagining art historical subject matter within the framework of my own contemporary experience and family life. Drawing from the techniques of 17th

century Dutch painters, I implement soft glazes and subtle impasto into my practice to further the sense of harmony that the subject matter introduces. The transformative qualities of light and color play a large role in my rendering of humble and overlooked objects, placing an emphasis on ephemerality. My paintings accentuate the glory found in the everyday: from objects that define who we are, to intimate genre paintings, I make work about what it means to belong.
